The first annual Walk for Truth is over and it was a success!

Over 100 people participated in the AREA Fund’s first annual “Walk for Truth” - 30 were out of town guests. We are truly grateful for the effort that people made to attend, for the community support, and of course the support from all of our sponsors and volunteers. A local newspaper reporter covered the event, as did the CBC. We received many compliments regarding the guest speakers; they did a terrific job:
- Mike Verdiel, President of Local 76, CEP
- Scott McCloy, Communications Director, WorkSafeBC
- Dr. Christopher Lee, Medical Oncologist
- Ross Cooper, lost his father to mesothelioma
- Pat Martin, Winnipeg MP, fighting to ban asbestos
- Nicholas Simons, Powell River - Sunshine Coast MLA
- Lee Loftus, Business Manager, BC Insulators Local 118
A wonderful unexpected outcome of the event:
After the walk, Winnipeg MP Pat Martin, local MLA Nicholas Simons, and Mayor Dave Formosa had an impromptu meeting with labour representatives to discuss potential asbestos-related initiatives, such as incentives for asbestos removal from private homes, and the need for federal, provincial and municipal subsidies for this. They also touched on asbestos awareness and education for the public.
We will host the event in Powell River again next year. Hope you can join us. If you were at this year’s event and have suggestions for next year, please email tracy@areafund.ca
